Unless you live in the tropics or have a heated pond, I wouldn't recommend it, especially a small pond(under 500 gallons). The temperature variations could kill them.
I use outdoor timers for my lights. The ones I have use a light meter to tell when it gets dark and automatically turns them on for me. If you have plugs outside I would recommend using one of those. There are many other ways, like using an outlet with a switch, if you have one, or getting a remote controlled plug (which you could find in any hardware store or online). Hope this helped!
